Gooseum Rhyne Reservoir Improvement Scheme

Closed 3 Nov 2023

Opened 3 Jul 2023

Overview

This page was updated on Friday 29 September 2023.

The Gooseum Rhyne Reservoir is a flood storage area on the Congresbury Yeo River. It was classified as a reservoir in 2006 under the Reservoirs Act 1975 due to the volume of water it can hold above the adjacent natural ground.

As a designated reservoir structure, the Environment Agency has the legal responsibility to ensure its continued safe operation.

Following an inspection by a reservoir specialist, areas for improvements that must be made in the interests of safety were identified. We are now in the process of developing a solution to ensure the reservoir continues to operate safely and that it can be properly maintained.

We invite you to our public drop-in events.

Since we last met in February, we’ve been updating our proposals and are now ready to share these updates with you ahead of submitting our planning application in January 2024.

We are hosting the same event on separate days to provide more flexibility for you to be able to come and talk to us.

Event details can be found below.

The reservoir is formed by the raised riverbanks of the Congresbury Yeo and embankments along its northern and eastern edges. Currently, when the water levels in the River Yeo rise enough to spill into the fields, the reservoir will begin to fill up. When the water levels in the river drop, water will gradually flow back into the river through the culvert near the basketball court. The embankment around the edge of Millennium Green protects properties on the northern side of the River Yeo from flooding.

We are currently preparing our planning application, and would like to invite you to one of our public drop-in sessions in October to have a look at our proposals and talk to the the team ahead of submitting the application in January 2024.

In February 2023, we held a public drop-in session to share our proposals with you. Information on what we shared can be found here, and a report on the consultation can be found here.

Why your views matter

If you have an interest in our scheme, please join us at one of our public drop-in events, or if you’re unable to come along, please do have a look at our proposals, which will be uploaded to the site just before the first event, and fill out a feedback form.

If you have an interest in the improvement work we’re doing to the Gooseum Rhyne Reservoir, you can join our mailing list by emailing us at gooseumreservoir@environment-agency.gov.uk.

Your views will always be taken into consideration, and if there is scope to incorporate your preferences into the way works are carried out, without compromising their efficacy and safety, we will endeavour to do so.

What happens next

The summary of responses will be published within 12 weeks of the consultation closing.
