More managed realignment schemes should be considered.
More wetting of habitats via re-naturalising streams and tributaries of the Medway re-connecting it with its floodplain, especially in upper Medway, Beult and Teise.
NFM schemes for beavers across the catchment to be prioritised and funded. Money seems to be available for hard engineered solutions, such as at Allington Lock, why not for soft engineered NFM schemes?

Connections and climate change
7. To what extent do you think the objectives and measures set out in the draft flood risk management plans (FRMPs) support and contribute to the delivery of the ambitions in the national Flood and Coastal Erosion Risk Management Strategy (FCERM Strategy)?

Wetland and fenlands should be created, extended and linked up to provide carbon sinks, there is great potential for this in the Yalding area which is a know flooding hot spot. Wetland/fen creation could help mitigate flood risk in this area, capture and store carbon and enhance native biodiversity all at the same time. We at MVCP could help identify, plan and then manage such sites as we have the expertise, local contacts and willingness to take such projects forward if our time can be funded.
8. To what extent do the measures in the draft FRMPs help to deliver multiple benefits for both flood risk management and the wider water environment?

Other competing demands for land mean it is very hard for any statutory agency to ever do enough.
9. To what extent do you agree that the draft FRMPs consider the likely impacts of flood risk associated with climate change?

Look at future funding sources through such new financial instruments as Environmental Investment Bonds.
13. In what ways do you think you could support the delivery of the measures as set out in the draft FRMPs?
Please comment
As a delivery partner with 33 years of expertise, local contacts and specialist knowledge of relevant habitats both in framing their creation and management in the Medway catchment. We need to be paid for our time & expertise though (as we are not fully funded by our core partners), in the same way as any other consultancy would. Being funded purely on a project by project basis pushes all the risk onto us as non-profit conservation organisations. Otherwise,we as a set of 7 sister partnerships across Kent risk extinction and the concomitant loss of continuity of knowledge, community engagement, healthy living benefits, citizen science, cross over with academia and high skilled jobs in the rural economy, added economic value, and leverage of other sources of funding which we have demonstrably delivered over 30 years.
