Please provide your comments on the environmental permit application received from East Kent Recycling Limited (Required)
As an organisation concerned with protecting the environment around Swale Borough, we would like to object to the proposal by East Kent Recycling to increase their operations on the following grounds: Increase in lorry traffic: this would increase the existing air quality problem along the A2 and, particularly in Ospringe. Furthermore the road leading to the plant is narrow and is shared between lorries, cyclists and pedestrians. Noise for longer periods: There are several machines which operate on site and shake building waste including concrete into piles all day long. As part of the permit EKR are seeking to obtain, they wish to include a concrete crushing machine as well. Currently work starts at 7.00am, but the application would see an increase in operation times from 5.00am to 8.00pm, with the attendant noise pollution for local residents. Dust: This can particularly be observed during hot dry spells, and affects the coastal which is often covered in grey dust over the Summer months, which is likely to be toxic cement dust, a hazard for residents and hikers alike. Light Pollution: External lighting at the site is used during opening hours and spotlights shine directly across the creek into people's homes in Church Road, Oare. This nuisance would be aggravated by an extension to operating hours. Wildlife: Oare Creek and Marshes are protected as part of an SSSI. We feel this is incompatible with an increase in the level of polluting materials which are inevitably part of East Kent Recycling’s operation. Flood : Oare Creek and Marshes have a high flood risk. EKR' s site being only a short distance from the sea wall, there is a high risk of contaminants from EKR's site entering the creek during flooding.
